“La Chope des Puces” is a legendary bar situated in the heart of Paris, known as the epicenter of Manouche jazz. With its vibrant atmosphere and rich musical history, this iconic venue has played a significant role in the preservation and promotion of this unique genre.
Founded on September 14, 1963, by Miss and Mr. Douville, who owned the 122nd rue des Rosiers in St Ouen, the bar originally operated as a small establishment called “Chez Marcel.” However, after acquiring it, they renamed it “La Chope des Puces.” With their vision and passion, they set the stage for something extraordinary.
The Douvilles wasted no time in assembling a talented team. They reached out to an accordionist and a young guitarist named Mondine García, setting the foundation for the music that would soon captivate audiences. Over time, the accordionist was replaced by another guitarist, Niglo Landauer. Together, they brought the magic of Manouche jazz to life, making “La Chope des Puces” famous.
Following Niglo Landauer’s untimely passing, it was Ninine García, the son of Mondine, who stepped in to fill the void. Since then, the García family has become an integral part of the “Gypsy Jazz” temple, delivering captivating performances that have become the hallmark of “La Chope des Puces.”
The music emanating from this historic venue is simply exceptional. Its unique blend of rhythm, melody, and improvisation has inspired many, yet few have been able to replicate its magic. “La Chope des Puces” stands as a testament to the remarkable artistry of the Manouche jazz tradition.
Credit must be given to Mrs. Jeanne Cocq, who took charge in 1980, managing and nurturing the environment that makes “La Chope des Puces” so special.
