Who is Arthur Mota?

Arthur Motta was a French jazz drummer who made a significant impact on the jazz music scene in France during the 20th century. Born in 1922, Motta grew up in a musical family and began playing the drums at an early age. He quickly developed a love for jazz music and started playing in local clubs and venues as a teenager.

In 1941/42, Motta and his band won the prize for small ensembles at the amateur competition in the Salle Pleyel, which helped launch his career. He quickly became a sought-after drummer, performing with some of the biggest names in French jazz, including Django Reinhardt, Stéphane Grappelli, and Sidney Bechet.

Motta’s unique style of drumming was characterized by his use of brushes and his ability to create intricate rhythms and polyrhythms. He was also known for his ability to seamlessly integrate with other musicians, creating a cohesive sound that was both powerful and refined.

Throughout his career, Motta recorded several albums, including “Arthur Motta et son orchestre” and “Drums Around the World”. He also performed on numerous live recordings, including “Live in Paris” with Django Reinhardt and “Live at the Olympia” with Stéphane Grappelli.

In addition to his work as a musician, Motta was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Conservatoire de Paris for many years, passing on his knowledge and skills to future generations of jazz musicians.
