Who is Benji Winterstein?

Benji Winterstein was born in 1991 to a family with a rich history in the world of gypsy jazz. His father, “Popots” Winterstein, was a well-known guitarist in the genre, and it was under his guidance that Benji first began to learn to play.

Growing up, Benji was immersed in the sounds of gypsy jazz, listening to recordings by the greats of the genre, including Django Reinhardt and his own father. He was particularly drawn to the virtuosic playing of Bireli Lagrene, Georges Benson, Stochelo Rosenberg, Dorado and Samson Schmitt, and he spent hours studying their techniques and styles.

As he grew older, Benji began to play with some of the leading lights of the gypsy jazz scene. He joined forces with Samson Schmitt, Macho Winterstein and other musicians, playing in concerts and festivals across Europe and beyond. He quickly established himself as a skilled and versatile guitarist, equally at home playing rhythm or lead.

Benji’s playing is characterized by a deep understanding of the gypsy jazz tradition, combined with a willingness to push the boundaries and explore new sounds and ideas. He is known for his lightning-fast runs and intricate solos, as well as his sensitive accompaniment of other musicians.

Today, Benji Winterstein is recognized as one of the leading guitarists in the gypsy jazz world. He continues to perform and record, both as a solo artist and with other musicians, and he is constantly exploring new avenues of musical expression while remaining rooted in the rich traditions of the genre.
