Didier Lockwood

Didier Lockwood, born on February 11, 1956, and passed away on February 18, 2018, was a highly acclaimed French violinist. Music ran in his family as his father was a violinist and his brother a pianist. Didier’s musical journey began at a young age, and at the age of 13, he joined The Canais Theater. In 1972, he received his first awards from the Academy of Music and Dance of France, showcasing his exceptional talent. He initially studied classical music but soon ventured into other genres.

In 1974, Didier became a part of the Jazz rock band Magma, followed by collaborations with fusion bands such as Christian Vander and Jannick Top. It was at the age of 21 that he caught the attention of jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli, who recognized his immense talent. This marked the beginning of Didier’s journey into the world of jazz. He went on to perform at prestigious events and festivals, including the Montreux Festival, Castellet, Antibes, and Donaueschingen in 1978. In 1980, he played at the Festivals of Yatra Bombay and the Newport Jazz Festival.

In 1985, Didier made a significant move to New York, where he had the opportunity to perform alongside legendary musicians such as Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Billy Cobham, Dave Brubeck, Michel Petrucciani, and Mike Stern. These collaborations further enriched his musical experience and solidified his place in the jazz world.

As his career progressed, Didier Lockwood turned his focus towards composition. After performing in over 3000 concerts and releasing 30 LPs, he explored his creativity as a composer. His contributions to the world of music were widely recognized, and he left an indelible mark on the jazz community.
