Who is Gary Potter?
Gary Potter is a British Gypsy Jazz player. He was Born in Liverpool, Lancashire, England in 1965, Gary Potter began playing guitar in his youth and joined country music bands at the age of 12. After spending time in the USA, he gained recognition in Nashville, Tennessee and was honored with induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame. While initially inspired by early rock ‘n’ roll, Potter’s interest soon shifted to jazz, particularly the playing of Django Reinhardt, whose music he admired. His talent has been widely recognized by other guitarists, including Chet Atkins and George Harrison.
In the 1990s, Potter gained prominence for his jazz work, earning second place in the guitar section of the British Jazz Awards in 1994 and appearing in the television documentary, The Django Legacy (1999). Throughout the 2000s, he collaborated with musicians such as guitarist Nils Solberg, bass player Andy Crowdy, and violinist Christian Garrick. In addition to his performing career, Potter also composes and arranges music and teaches internationally.
