Who is Jozef "Waso" Grünholz?
Jozef “Waso” Grünholz, born on March 27, 1939, and passed away on February 28, 2020, in Gerwen, Nuenen, The Netherlands, was a legendary and beloved figure within the Sinti musician community, particularly in the Christian evangelical movement. He had a significant influence on many of the finest Gypsy musicians, including Stochelo Rosenberg, Jimmy Rosenberg, Tcha Limberger, and Paulus Schäfer. Jozef was the son of Latscheben Grünholz and the nephew of Piotto Limberger, his mother’s brother.
Jozef Grünholz was widely recognized for his exceptional talent in creating beautiful chord arrangements and compositions, which became his trademark. As a Dutch Gypsy musician and the uncle of Stochelo Rosenberg (his mother’s brother), he played a crucial role in shaping the music scene. Many of his compositions were waltzes, showcasing his unique style and creativity.
Jozef Grünholz is often regarded as the founder of the Dutch School of Gypsy Swing Jazz. This musical movement originated in Nuenen, Netherlands, which became known as the European Capital of Gypsy Swing.
