Leon Slab

Leo Slabiak, whose full name was Leon Slabiak, was born in Poland in 1920 and passed away in 2007 at the age of 87. He was a renowned violinist and an influential figure in the French jazz scene, particularly in the style of the Hot Club of France. Slabiak’s profound talent and unique style earned him a place among the most revered musicians of his time.

After moving to France, Slabiak co-founded the “Swing Quintette of Paris” with guitarist Jacques Montagne. The quintet spent many years performing in cabarets and nightclubs, bringing their distinctive blend of gypsy jazz to enthusiastic audiences.

Following the end of World War II, Slabiak embarked on a collaboration with Joseph Reinhardt that would last more than a decade. This partnership allowed him to further hone his skills and solidify his reputation as a leading figure in French jazz.

Throughout his career, Slabiak also had the opportunity to play alongside some of the most notable names in the genre, including the Ferret brothers, Henri Crolla, Marcel Bianchi, and accordionist Gus Viseur. These collaborations further enriched his musical experience and expanded his influence.

In the year 2000, demonstrating his enduring passion for music and his dedication to the gypsy jazz style, Slabiak formed a new quintet. Together with guitarist Philippe Guignier, he recorded the album “La Roulette”, further cementing his influence and legacy in the world of gypsy jazz.

Although Leon Slabiak is no longer with us, his impact on the French jazz scene continues to be felt, and his music continues to inspire musicians and enthusiasts alike. His legacy lives on through his recordings and the many musicians he influenced throughout his illustrious career.
