Who is Rino van Hooijdonk?

Rino van Hooijdonk, a celebrated Dutch guitarist, is renowned for his dedication to the pure Django Reinhardt style of Gypsy Jazz. Born and raised in the Netherlands, Rino found his passion in the musical style of Django, immersing himself completely in the nuances of this distinctive genre.

His journey into the world of Gypsy Jazz began under the tutelage of the legendary Sani Rosenberg, father of Nousche Rosenberg, a member of the esteemed Rosenberg Trio. This mentorship not only instilled in him the foundational skills but also the artistic flair that would shape his future musical career.

In the early stages of his career, Rino formed a band with Stochelo and Nous’che Rosenberg. The trio quickly gained recognition for their captivating performances and toured extensively across the Netherlands, earning a solid fanbase and leaving an indelible mark on the local music scene.

Rino’s exceptional talent also drew the attention of Fapy Lafertin, a prominent figure in the world of Gypsy Jazz. Rino had the honor of playing in Lafertin’s “Swinging Band,” further enhancing his reputation as a skilled and versatile guitarist.

His collaborations extended beyond the borders of the Netherlands when he played with the French clarinetist Jean Francois Bonnel. These international partnerships played a crucial role in shaping Rino’s musical style, enriching his performances with a blend of diverse cultural influences.

Later in his career, Rino formed his Quintette, featuring Daniel Weltlinger and JoAnn Gardner on violin, Niels on bass, and Nick Sansone. The ensemble thrived under his leadership, and their performances exemplified the heart and soul of Gypsy Jazz.
