Who is Spatzo Adel?
Vittorio Mayer Pasquale, better known by his stage name “Spatzo Adel” was born in Bolzano, Italy in 1927 and passed away in 2005. He was a distinguished figure in the world of Gypsy Jazz, a genre that combines jazz and Romani musical traditions, famously initiated by Django Reinhardt.
Spatzo’s musical journey began in Italy but his talent eventually led him to Paris, France, the cradle of Gypsy Jazz. His style, deeply influenced by Django Reinhardt, earned him a place in the vibrant music scene in Paris. He was renowned for his unique interpretive skills and the passion that he brought to his performances.
The famous bar ‘La Chope des Puces’ at Porte de Clignancourt in Paris was Spatzo’s regular haunt for many years. It was here that he brought Django’s repertoire to life, enthralling audiences with his masterful guitar playing. Spatzo’s performances at ‘La Chope des Puces’ became legendary, contributing to the rich history of this iconic venue.
In 1984, he was photographed accompanying the esteemed musicians Mondine and Ninine Garcia, cementing his place among the greats of Gypsy Jazz. Despite his passing in 2005, his legacy continues to inspire the next generation of musicians and his contribution to Gypsy Jazz remains celebrated.
